Our History
Svoronos Metallic Yarn is a family owned company, based at the historic center of Athens. Our journey began about a century ago, in 1928, as a general store. Our grandfather and founder of the company, Pavlos Svoronos, saw a dynamic and upmarket industry in textile. In 1957 he became the first to introduce metallic yarn to Greece.
For the first time, the leaders of the textile industry in the Greek market started to use metallic yarn for knitting and weaving. Soon after, the company moved to the heart of the textile market on Romvis Street, where it is based to this day.
The textile industry attracts professionals for the production of clerical clothing, embroidery, ribbon making, handicrafts, silk-making, lace-making, traditional costumes, knitwear, decoration articles, and haute couture fashion. Gold and silver thread were the height of fashion during the 60’s and 70’s.
In the early 1980s, Pavlos’ son, Stefanos Svoronos, became the director of the company and a new market opened for Svoronos Metallic Yarn. Stefanos started partnerships with leading textile companies in Japan and Korea. New colours of metallic yarn started to show up on our shelves: shiny red, beautiful pink and blue colours, green and purple and the classic black! Great variety, credibility, excellent customer care, and affordable prices, have brought us to the top of the gold thread market.
In 2015, Stefanos’ daughters Maria and Barbara joined the company. The textile market is changing and metallic yarn is now used widely across the textile industry. Thus, we feel challenged to constantly look for new products in order to cover the needs of an expanding market.
Indeed, Gold thread is found everywhere: knitwear and embroidery, church items, household fabrics and decorative items, souvenirs and tourist clothing, silk making, traditional clothes, flags and banners, theatrical costumes, carnival costumes, bridal wedding and christening supplies, haute couture, christmas and easter decoration, home decoration, musical instruments making, art creations and installations, creative childrens workshops, artwork, performances, even in shiny lures for fishing!
The creativity, imagination and goodwill of our partners motivates and empowers us to keep moving forward!
